Report: OpenAI to announce new board members in March
(Reuters) – ChatGPT maker OpenAI plans to appoint several new board members in March, the Washington Post reported on Thursday, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The move would finally end the impasse that began after the Microsoft-backed company’s former board fired CEO Sam Altman in November.
However, Altman returned just days later, and OpenAI also announced a new original board with former Salesforce CEO Bret Taylor as chairman.
OpenAI’s new board has since actively sought six members with expertise ranging from technology to security and policy.
OpenAI did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
Microsoft would take a silent observer position on OpenAI’s board, Altman said in November after taking back the reins of the company.
OpenAI investors were also unlikely to get a seat on the nonprofit’s board, sources previously told Reuters.
In addition to Altman, co-founder Greg Brockman, principal investigator Ilya Sutskever, and Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo, OpenAI’s previous board consisted of entrepreneur Tasha McCauley and Helen Toner, director of strategy at Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technologies.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is reviewing Altman’s internal communications as part of an investigation into whether the company’s investors were misled.
